Our Opera House
The Vermontville Opera House was built in 1896. It quickly became the main centerpiece of the community. Initially, it was a large one room building that housed many community activities, some of which included dances, graduations, church activities, roller skating and basketball. In 1898, local businessmen added the stage and balcony area. Vern Slout and the Slout Players was a travel tent show group that held many performances at the opera house. At one point in time, a wall was built to enclose the balcony and every weekend the townspeople would show up to watch movies. It was a great time for all! In the 1980's, a local English teacher, Dorothy Carpenter, had a theatre group that performed here, but due to the deterioration of the building the performances ended. The opera house was in limbo of being torn down but was preserved and restored by the community. The opera house has the honor of being listed with The Registry of National Historic Buildings. |
